I used GIMP to convert a color photo to black and white by first selecting the subject with the Scissors Select Tool. This tool allows for a precise selection of areas based on their boundaries. After carefully outlining the subject, I separated it from the background, and then applied a black-and-white filter to remove the color, leaving the image in grayscale
